For the environment: Sustainability at Mersen in Husum

Sustainability is a top priority at Mersen’s Husum location. In addition to heat from local biogas plants and electricity from an on-site photovoltaic installation, the company is committed to responsible resource management.

“We have long been aware of the importance of sustainability and the need to implement specific measures in this regard”, says André Tausche, Managing Director of FTCAP, the company’s location in Northern Germany. “We work together with a local biogas CHP plant, which eliminates the need for fossil fuels for heating and hot water.” A second plant located about two kilometres away is currently under construction to cover the company’s requirements or to serve as a back-up during maintenance work on the first plant. Mersen also uses heat from the eco-friendly plant in its production processes, e.g. in impregnating boilers.

Another important area is recycling: Currently, two-thirds of the waste material from production is recycled. “We are well on our way to achieving the goal of 80 percent”, says André Tausche. “Materials such as aluminium and copper are especially suitable for recycling. And our product packaging consists primarily of recyclable paper.” In addition, the entire location is gradually being converted to LED bulbs, which significantly helps to reduce energy consumption.
